Ochenta años de CONMEBL

El Dr. Nicolás Leoz, presidente de la CONMEBOL desde 1986 y con mandato hasta el 2002. En su gestión se produjo un cambio revolucionario en la conducción y en las estructuras de la entidad.

Hacia el final del siglo, el mundo tiende a integrarse, a agruparse en grandes bloques comerciales y políticos. La comunidad de las naciones advierte sólo un futuro posible: en unidad. El 9 de Julio de 1916, ochenta años antes de esta tendencia, un grupo de extraordinarios dirigentes sudamericanos, "sportsmen" de notable visión, se reunieron en la impactante ciudad de Buenos Aires y decidieron fundar la Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol y crear la Copa América. Fue la primera en su tipo en el mundo, la precursora de todas sus congéneres, creadas varias décadas después. Esta sola referencia de una pauta del hecho excepcional que estaban llevando a cabo aquellos pioneros. A ocho décadas de su fundación, la confederación - conocida hoy mundialmente como CONMEBOL - se halla en el mejor momento de su historia, con más de un docena de torneos continentales e intercontinentales, disputándose regularmente, y con relaciones óptimas con la FIFA, con las demás confederaciones colegas y sus asociaciones miembros. En el plano deportivo, el fútbol sudamericano se encuentra en el cenit: campeón mundial de mayores a través de Brasil y de juveniles por medio de Argentina. Detrás de todo ello, inalterable y fascinante, sigue reinando un estilo, un forma de practicar este juego: la del fútbol sudamericano. A las Asociaciones Nacionales, a los futbolistas, a los dirigentes, a los periodistas, a los árbitros y especialmente al apasionado público del continente, a todos aquellos quines han hecho factible tanta grandeza, tantas conquista y alegrías, el homenaje sincero en este significativo aniversario.

CONMEBL's eighty years

Towards the end of the century, the world tends to cluster round a common nucleus, focusing in the creation of big commercial and political blocs. The community of nations reports that only one possible future lies in store for us: in unity. On July 9th., 1916, eighty years before this trend, a group of outstanding South American leaders, sportsmen of keen sight, met in the dazzling city of Buenos Aires, and decided to found the South American Football Confederation at the same time they gave birth to the America Cup.

It was the first of its kind worldwide, the predecessor of its fellow institutions, created several decades after. This simple fact is evident proof of the extraordinary event that those pioneers had set in motion. Eight decades after its foundation, the Confederation - at present know worldwide as CONMEBOL - is at the pinnacle of its history, with more than dozen continental and intercontinental tournaments being regularly disputed, and enjoying excellent relations with FIFA, with all its other colleague confederations and member associations. From the sporting viewpoint, South American football has reached the zenith: Senior World Champion with Brazil and Junior with Argentina. And behind all this, unchanging and fascinating, a prevailing style, a way of playing the game, that of the South American football. To the National Associations, footballers, leaders, journalists, referees and especially to the continent's impassioned fans, to all those who have made such greatness, conquests and joys possible, the sincere homage of this significant anniversary.
