Confirmando el extraordinario poderío de su fútbol en todas las disciplinas, Brasil se consagró Campeón Sudamericano de Futsal, en el torneo realizado en Niteroi, estado de Río de Janeiro, entre el 16 y el 20 de abril último. Con ello se aseguró el pasaje al Campeonato Mundial de Futsal de la FIFA, a jugarse en España del 24 de noviembre al 8 de diciembre. También lograron una plaza Uruguay y Argentina, segundo y tercero de Brasil respectivamente.
Magnífico torneo
Con enorme satisfacción debemos señalar que el Futsal está creciendo vigorosamente en Sudamérica. Los equipos de Brasil, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile y Venezuela tomaron parte de un torneo que fue verdaderamente un modelo de organización.
Se desarrolló en cinco jornadas de dos encuentros cada, siempre a estadio lleno, en el Gimnasio "Tío Sam", de enormes comodidades. El certamen se transmitió por televisión en directo a Brasil y tuvo un promedio de asistencia de 5.000 espectadores por día. Debe resaltarse el marco en que se jugó, la prolijidad del escenario y la puesta en escena general del espectáculo.
Eugenio Figueredo, vicepresidente de la CONMEBOL y titular de la Comisión de Futsal, fue el director de la competencia, asistido por Alfredo Asfura, también de dicha comisión, y Carlos Alarcón, miembro de la Comisión de Arbitros de la Confederación.
Amplia superioridad brasileña;
Brasil, campeón Mundial de Futsal en Hong Kong 1992 es la máxima potencia en esta modalidad y por ende era el gran favorito en el Sudamericano. Supo responder a su candidatura y se impuso por cifras abultadas en todas sus presentaciones: 13-1 a Venezuela, 7-2 a Paraguay, 6-0 sobre Argentina y 8-1 frente Uruguay. Sin duda será nuevamente un gran embajador en el torneo de España.
Luiz Ortiz, habilisimo armador y definidor de juego, recibió el trofeo al Mejor Jugador del Torneo.
Debe destacarse también el muy buen nivel de juego de los seis participantes, en especial de Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina y Chile, los cuatro muy parejos. El Futsal es una especialidad donde la técnica y el dribbling son determinantes, y esto es patrimonio natural del futbolista sudamericano. El juego, además, cobra emoción por el ritmo sostenido y el ruido seco que provocan los pelotazos, que entusiasman al público, así como el alto número de goles. El Futsal cobra cada día mayor interés, y una pauta de ello es que Chile contrató para su equipo al director técnico argentino Vicente De Luise, ex entrenador de la Selección Argentina de esta categoría.

As proof of the extraordinary power of its football in all its manifestations, Brazil attained the South American Futsal Championship, staged in Niteroi, State of Rio de Janeiro, between April 16 and 20 last. With this triumph it secured its ticket to FIFA'S Futsal World Cup Championship, scheduled to take place in Spain from November 24 to December 8. Uruguay and Argentina, second and third after Brazil, will also participate.
Splendid tournament
We are greatly pleased to inform our readers that Futsal is vigorously growing in South America. The teams of Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Venezuela have taken part in a tournament that was a model of organization.
It developed through five days of two encounters each, with a crowded stadium, in the "Uncle Sam" gymnasium, which is extremely comfortable. The competition was televised live in Brazil, with an average attendance of 5,000 spectators per day. We must make a special reference to the environment within which it took place, the possibilities of the stage and the general scenery of the show.
Eugenio Figueredo, CONMEBOL vice-president and head of the Futsal Commission, was the director of the competition, with assistance of Alfredo Asfura, also a member of said Commission, and Carlos Alarcon, member of the Referees' Board of the Confederation.
Ample brazilian superiority
Brazil, Futsal World Champion in Hong Kong 1992 is the maximum exponent of this way of playing the game and it was also the great favorite of the South American. It knew how to rise to its fans' expectations and took the lead by top figures in all its presentations: 13-1 to Venezuela, 7-2 to Paraguay, 6-0 to Argentina and 8-1 to Uruguay. It will undoubtedly be an excellent ambassador in the tournament to be played in Spain.
Luiz Ortiz, most skillful game-designer and smart to define the game, received the trophy awarded to the Tournament's Best Player.
We must also pay special attention to the six participants' good level of the game, especially Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina and Chile, all four of them very alike. Futsal is a specialty in which technique and dribbling are determining factors, and they are the natural heritage of the South American footballer. The game itself is thrilling, due to its permanent rhythm and the dry and sharp noise of each shot that arises the public's enthusiasm, as well as the high number of goals. Futsal grows in interest daily, and proof of our assertion is that Chile has hired the Argentine coach Vicente De Luise, former trainer of the Argentine National Team of this category, as its team's coach.
