La Eliminatoria Sudamericana para la Copa Mundial
Francia '98 es todo un éxito. El público recibió
con entusiasmo el sistema de disputa de todos contra todos, del
que surgirán los cuatro clasificados para el próximo
Mundial. Cada mes el aficionado se apresta a vivir las emocionantes
alternativas de una fecha completa. Además, en muchos países
la televisión lleva en directo las imágenes de los
otros encuentros. Y como todos están relacionados entre
sí por la tabla de posiciones, cada partido tiene importancia
vital para los nueve participantes.
Y en apenas tres jornadas, la disputa ha deparado varias sorpresas, que son las que le otorgan ese condimento tan especial al fútbol. Chile le empató angustiosamente a Venezuela en el último minuto. Esto, sumado a que no venía jugando bien en los amistosos previos, le costó el puesto al entrenador vasco Xabier Azkargorta. En su reemplazo fue contratado el uruguayo nacionalizado chileno Nelson Acosta, quien debutó con un gran triunfo: 4-1 a Ecuador. Ecuador goleó a Perú y venció con autoridad a Argentina. El equipo de Maturana se perfila como uno de los que puede dar el golpe inesperado. Paraguay, de auspicioso comienzo, le propinó a Uruguay la tercera derrota de su historia en las Eliminatorias jugando en el Centenario (sólo Colombia, en 1973, y Perú, en 1981, lo habían vencido en su tierra). Sin dudas, de las tres fechas disputadas, emerge Colombia como el más regular y de mejor andar. Ganó con lo justo a Paraguay y empató con bastante fortuna en Perú, pero luego hizo un excelente partido ante Uruguay. Valderrama, nuevamente, está en un nivel excepcional y es el eje del conjunto. Argentina comenzó bien ante Bolivia, pero luego decayó y ha desanimado a sus hinchas, aunque tiene extraordinarios jugadores y sigue siendo candidato. A su vez, Bolivia hizo pesar su entusiasmo y la condición de local al golear a Venezuela 6 a 1. |
The South American Preliminaries for World Cup France
'98, have been a tremendous success. The public welcomed enthusiastically
the round-robin format of this tournament, wherefore the four
qualified teams for next World Cup shall spring. Every month,
fans are given the opportunity of watching the thrilling alternatives of a full Preliminary Game. Moreover,
the other matches are televised live in many countries. And as
all the encounters are related according to the standings table,
each match is of vital importance for all nine participants.
In scarcely three games, the competition has furnished several surprises, which tinge football with that flavor that makes of it such a special sport. Chile managed to get an agonizing draw at the last minute with Venezuela. This fact together with its lackluster performances in the previous friendly matches resulted in Basque coach Xabier Azkargorta being laid off. The Uruguayan, though Chilean by adoption, Nelson Acosta, was hired to replace him and he made his debut with a brilliant 4-1 victory over Ecuador. Ecuador scored against Perú and had an easy victory over Argentina. Maturana's team seems to be one of those that may bring about an unexpected blow. Paraguay, with a most promising beginning, overcame Uruguay for the third time in its history in the Preliminaries, in the Centenario Stadium (only Colombia in 1973, and Per0, in 1981, had beaten Uruguay in its own land). Undoubtedly, of the three dates of dispute, Colombia emerges as the better qualified to win. It managed to attain a tight win with Paraguay and had a lucky tie with Per0, though it afterwards played an excellent match with Uruguay. Valderrama, once again, is at an exceptional moment of his career, the key figure of his squad. Argentina had a good beginning with Bolivia, but then it lost its grip and its fans were discouraged, though its footballers are remarkable and it keeps on being a candidate. In its turn, Bolivia evinced its enthusiasm emphasizing its condition of home team by defeating Venezuela by a 6-1 score. |
