Gremio, el viejo guerrero de Porto Alegre, se coronó
campeón de la 8va. edición de la Recopa Sudamericana
JAL, al vencer ampliamente a Independiente, de Argentina, por
4 a 1. El encuentro, disputado el 7 de abril, se realizó nuevamente
en la maravillosa ciudad de Kobe, que dos años antes fuera
arrasada por un terremoto y que ya está erguida, reluciente,
en el tramo final de su reconstrucción.
Gremio, campeón de la Copa Libertadores 1995,
hizo valer su notable efectividad, su seguridad defensiva y la
potencia de su afamada dupla atacante: Jardel y Paulo Nunes. También
se vio nuevamente la mano del gran estratega que es Luiz Felipe
Scolari, uno de los mejores entrenadores de Sudamérica.
Independiente, equipo célebre por su buen juego, pero especialmente
por su determinación en cotejos decisivos (disputó
siete finales de la Libertadores, tres de la Supercopa, una de
la Recopa y tres de la Interamericana y ganó 13 de 14)
fue esta vez una formación vulnerable. Dominó gran
parte del encuentro, buscó incesantemente el arco de Darnlei,
pero nunca pudo hallar el camino del gol. Incluso en el intento
por igualar o descontar en el marcador, ofreció flancos
defensivos que fueron explotados al máximo por Gremio.
Jardel, que luego de su extraordinario año 1995 había
sido transferido a Europa, regresó a Gremio y reapareció
precisamente en este partido. Como es su costumbre, abrió
el marcador mediante un cabezazo, su especialidad. Independiente,
más por insistencia que por claridad, consiguió
el empate a través de un penal ejecutado por Jorge Burruchaga,
veterano ilustre del Mundial '86. Desde allí hasta el final
todo fue un calco: Independiente manejando la pelota, Gremio llevando
peligro de contraataque. Independiente buscando el arco rival,
Gremio encontrándolo. Así fueron llegando los goles
que convirtieron a esta edición en la de marcador más
abultado.
La organización del encuentro, a cargo de
la empresa lSM, fue de una prolijidad rayana en la perfección.
Nuevamente el público japonés acompañó
a la Recopa JAL con la corrección y el entusiasmo que le
son característicos. El fútbol sudamericano tiene
el orgullo de saber que lleva a dos de sus representantes a jugar
entre sí en un país lejano y despierta enorme interés
en la afición. Vale resaltar, entonces, la calidad de los
equipos y el comportamiento de los jugadores, empeñados
en brindar el mejor espectáculo posible. Por su parte,
la gala previa fue un encuentro de extraordinaria camaradería
con los más altos funcionarios de la ciudad de Kobe de
la Asociación Japonesa de Fútbol y de la compañía
Japan Airlines, cuya tradicional hospitalidad quedó nuevamente
demostrada. |

champion of the 8th. edition of the South American JAL Recopa,
with a spectacular 4-1 victory over lndependiente, of Argentina.
The match disputed on April 7th., was once again staged in the marvelous city
of Kobe, which had been devastated by a terrible earthquake two
years before, despite which it looks spick and span while in the
final stage of its restoration.
Gremio, the 1995 Libertadores Cup Champion, was able
to evince its efficiency, sureness of defense and the tremendous
power of its famous attacking pair: Jardel and Paulo Nunes. The
hand of the great strategist Luiz Felipe Scolari, one of South
America's best coaches, was also easily detected. lndependiente,
famous for its excellent performances and above all for its determination
in decisive encounters (it played seven finals of the Libertadores,
two of the Supercup, one of the Recopa and three of the Interamerican,
winning all thirteen Cups), presented on this occasion a vulnerable
line-up. It seemed to take the lead during most of the game in
a permanent search to get to Darnlei's goal, though it never succeeded
in finding the right path to reach it. And in its eager attempt
to equalize or discount points in the score-board, it exposed
some weak points that Gremio knew how to take advantage of in
a relentless way.
Jardel, who after an extraordinary 1995, had
been transferred to Europe, returned to Gremio and reappeared
precisely in this game. As it is customary for him, he opened
the score with a header, his specialty. lndependiente, thanks
to persistence more than to clearness, managed to draw with a
penalty by Jorge Burruchaga, illustrious veteran of the 1986 World
Cup. From then on until the final, everything was the same: Independiente
had the ball possession, though it was Gremio who gave origin
to many dangerous situations with its counterattacks. lndependiente,
in desperate search of the rival goal and Gremio, finding it. That is how the number of goals
scored in this edition was indeed high.
The organization of the match, entrusted to the business
enterprise ISM, was praiseworthy, close to perfection. Once again,
the Japanese fans accompanied the Jal Recopa with their characteristic
enthusiasm and excellent behavior. South American football can
boast of having taken two of its most representative teams to
a far-off land where they awakened a tremendous interest in these
foreign fans. Therefore, we must specially remark on the teams'
quality and the footballers' behavior, always eager to offer the
best possible show. Likewise, the previous gala-party was held
in an atmosphere of comradeship with the top level officials of
the city of Kobe, the Japanese Football Association and Japan
Airlines, whose traditional hospitality was once again made manifest.
