El sueño del oro quedó postergado para Sudamérica.
Un brillante equipo de Nigeria logró la coronación
en los Juegos Olímpicos de Atlanta 96. Pero el saldo, como
es habitual, fue excelente para nuestro continente: medalla de
plata para Argentina y de bronce para Brasil. Los dos equipos
parecían seguros vencedores del que, finalmente, sería
campeón. Brasil lo derrotaba por 3-1 a 13 minutos del final;
Argentina le ganaba 2-1. Sin embargo, en ambos casos el conjunto
africano experimentó una fantástica reacción,
dio vuelta el resultado y se coronó campeón con
absoluta justicia y merecimientos. Lo que no empaña, de
ningún modo, el rendimiento de nuestros representantes.
Como corresponde a Brasil y Argentina, probablemente las dos grandes
potencias mundiales de este depone, acudieron a Atlanta con equipos
de altísimo nivel, ambos conducidos por su primer entrenador
nacional. Y como buenos favoritos, arribaron a las instancias
finales. A su vez, Bebeto (Brasil) y Hernán Crespo (Argentina),
resultaron los máximos goleadores del certamen con 6 tantos
en igual cantidad de partidos. Detrás de ellos, con cinco,
quedó el juvenil Ronaldo, que apunta junto a Crespo para
convenirse en uno de los grandes artilleros del fin del siglo.
The dream of achieving the gold medal was postponed for South
America. A brilliant team from Nigeria attained victory in the
Olympic Games of Atlanta '96. But the balance, as usual, was excellent
for our continent: the silver medal for Argentina and the bronze
award for Brazil. Both teams seemed to have victory assured over
the side that was finally the champion. Brazil was beating it
by 3-1, at 13 minutes from the final; Argentina was winning by
a 2-1 score. Nevertheless, in both cases the African squad underwent
a fantastic reversal of fortune, turning over the result and being
crowned champion in full justice. This outcome does in no way
tarnish our representatives' performances. As it befits both,
Brazil and Argentina, probably the two greatest world powers of
this sport, were present in Atlanta with top level teams, led
by their first national coaches. And fulfilling the public's expectations
as favorites, they got to the final instances. Again, Bebeto (Brazil)
and Hernhm Crespo (Argentina), ended as the Tournament top scores
with 6 points each, in an equal number of matches. Behind them,
with five, was young Ronaldo, who seems ready to become, as well
as Crespo, one of the great strikers of the end of the century.

South American Power Remains Intact
Tanto Argentina como Brasil buscaban afanosamente el título
de Campeón Olímpico, el único que falta en
sus gloriosos historiales. Pero la espera no durará mucho
más. Nuevamente el fútbol sudamericano dio muestras
de una riqueza fabulosa en materia de jugadores. Brasil tuvo en
Ronaldinho (el próximo 22 de septiembre cumplirá
20 años y ya fue adquirido en 20 millones de dólares
por el Barcelona español) a un atacante fantástico.
Lo mismo que Crespo, de Argentina, otro notable artillero. Brasil,
por su parle, mostró al mundo a un volante excepcional,
con clase, garra, técnica y gol: Flavio Conceigao. Argentina
expuso en la media cancha a Matías Almeyda, extraordinario
en el quite y en el apoyo a la línea de ataque; y también
a Ariel Ortega, jugador de habilidad casi mágica. Los equipos
europeos, que en otras épocas planteaban dura lucha a los
sudamericanos por su estado físico y sus esquemas tácticos,
fueron fácilmente derrotados por Argentina y Brasil. Por
todo ello, si bien faltó el oro, el balance es altamente
positivo.
Argentina as well as Brazil were moved by an eager search after
the Olympic Champion title, still missing in their historical
records. But their waiting term will not last forever. Once again,
South American football proved that it has a fabulous profusion
of players. Brazil had in Ronaldinho a fantastic attacker, as
well as Crespo, of Argentina, another excellent scorer. (The first
will be 20 on September 22nd. next and has already been bought
for 20 million dollars by the Spanish Barcelona). Again, Brazil
showed a spectacular midfielder to the world, with class, grit,
technique and goal: Flavio Conceicao. Argentina exhibited Matias
Almeyda in midfield, excellent in taking the ball away from his
rivals and in his support to the line of attack, and also Ariel
Orfega, a player of almost magical skill. The European teams,
that were hard to defeat in the past due to their physical fitness
and tactical schemes, were easily overcome by Argentina and Brazil.
Hence, though the gold was not achieved, the balance is highly
positive for South America.
